SMUD board member Robert Pernell, has actually
raised more money than
Steinberg. Pernell reported contributions of $82,264 for the period between
Jan. 1 and March 17, compared with $81,062 for Steinberg.
Pernell, 48, a lobbyist for the California State Council of Laborers, is
relying
on a strong base off support among organized labor. His largest contribution
thus far -- $23,530 -- came from his employer.
Pernell, who grew up in Oak Park and has long been a community activist
in
Meadowview, is running on his record of public service and experience as
a
lobbyist.
"This is an obligation I can't turn my back on," Pernell said.
"I have the
ability, the experience and now the knowledge to direct resources to our
community.""
Pernell was one of the founders of Meadowview Community Action, a
nonprofit organization that runs two Head Start programs and a range of
job training and parenting programs. He lists funding for early childhood
education and the creation of good-paying, long-term jobs as his top
priorities. |
